Laminating finished graphics has always been the industry standard for adding additional protection against water damage and dirt or abrasion. Traditionally offered in a “film” base material, laminate typically is available in 3 forms: PSA, Low Temp and Hot. These terms refer to the temperature required to activate the adhesive applied to the film.

PSA laminates are referred to as “Cold” or “Pressure Sensitive”; essentially these films require pressure from the laminator rollers to activate the adhesive. These films are normally preferred for photo paper as they contain UV inhibitors which prevent premature light fade. Available thickness can range from a 3mil up to a 10mil.

Low Temp or Thermal laminates are designed to activate the adhesive using a low heat setting, and are usually preferred on projects that require encapsulation of the printed graphic. They are designed with UV inhibitors to prevent light fade and are treated to provide add “depth” to colour for a richer presentation. Available thickness can range from a 3mil up to 15mil.

Hot laminates activate the adhesive using high temperature settings and are normally micro thin. These films are designed for use on Coated Presentation Papers as they add protection without drastic alterations to the thickness of the overall project. Available thickness can range from 0.5mil to a 3mil.
