Giclee is a term used to refer to the process of “reproducing Fine Art in a digital format using inkjet printing”. The process of reproducing prints involves a complex relationship with the artist and the print maker; and requires a strong aptitude for colour, knowledge of your equipments capabilities and patience. The most popular print medium for this type of artwork is canvas, and based on whether you are reproducing a standard grade Décor canvas for hotel artwork or a limited edition print, the type of canvas you print on will determine the end result of you image after finishing.
Using a low grade canvas for example, is not recommended for limited edition printing as the product isn’t designed for the finishing aspects of the job such as stretching and framing. Poor quality coating on the canvas may also cause print quality or damage to your equipment. Options you will want to keep in mind when choosing your canvas are finish, laminate capabilities, can you stretch and frame and is it archival? Another important thing to note is that canvas is created using a natural product base…cotton. Being a natural product means that while you may use a liquid laminate to prevent the printed surface from dirt and scratching, the product is still susceptible to water damage which may result in mold or mildew.
At the end of the day, we normally suggest keeping a maximum of two or three styles of canvas on hand for your prints…take a 100% cotton in a satin finish to your higher scale work and a Poly/Cotton blended canvas in a matte for more of a production approach, keep open the option of changing the finish with a liquid laminate.
As with any product, we strongly recommend that you refer to each products specification sheet for more detailed information. These sheets are an invaluable asset when determining mounting and framing recommendations, surface variations and image permanence. These guidelines are created by the manufacturers to save you time and money!
This is an acid free, artist stretch canvas which performs best with Pigment/UV inks for image stability and suitable for décor art and production printing. Available in a 3” core product for Eco/Solvent Printer.
A 100% cotton, double weave canvas construction makes this the premium canvas for fine art reproduction. Canvas can be stretched, framed and mounted to rigid board, and is best used with a liquid laminate to protect imaged surface from scratches.
